Like all birds, owls do not have any teeth, therefore swallow the entire prey item without disintegration. Bones as well as other non-digestible parts of the diet such as feathers, hairs, skulls and teeth resist the digestive juices and are regurgitated and ejected as pellet. The analysis of pellets allows the identification of the owl’s prey species.
By means of comparison of bones and skulls contained in the pellet with illustrations in identification literature, we can eventually find out which animal was eaten by the owl.
