The stars are already pretty close at 1000 m asl. There is no light smog and the atmosphere is free of particles, so that one can see numerous planets, stars and constellations with the bare eye. Milky way, Great Bear, Mars, Venus and Orion are only a few examples. By the way, the sight of fallig stars are almost guaranteed in August...
